Excitement is Overrated (self-sabotage and what to do about it)

3 people in my life have recently shown the same limitation.

A limitation which comes largely from over excitement.

Why is excitement a limitation?

Because it inflates ego beyond reality, distracts from responsibility and sets you up for a 'reality check' that feels unfair, frustrating or disappointing.

A mega-list of things to do that extends beyond your comfort zone may have the effect of wearing you out in the short-term, and thus nothing much gets done at all.

The trouble with excitement about the future is that the excitement exists now yet the object of desire does not. If there is doubt about achieving the dream as fast as you want and as fully as you want, then the doubt creates inner conflict.

And conflict blocks manifestation.

If the aspiration, dream, goal or experience is kinda far off.. whether it be a long time to wait (a big complicated goal with many steps) or something that also extends beyond one's comfort zone... then inner conflicts serve to sabotage the enthusiasm.

Yet enthusiasm (en-theos) is to be god-like.

And excitement is one of the rewards and purposes of life.

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” - Theodore Roosevelt

So what to do?

How to find the balance of excitement and composure that successfully leads to action and fulfilment?

Develop Character

Character is the ability to carry out a good resolution long after the excitement of the moment has passed. - Cavett Robert

Reminds me of the song by Johnny Cash: "Because your mine, I walk the line".

Which suggests that because we have something to cherish and protect (first of all ourselves, also loved ones, opportunities, aspirations), we must walk a careful path not to be swayed too far left or right, leading us away from our balanced and progressive achievement.

And this means being careful not to go too far beyond our 'comfort zone' which causes overwhelm and inaction.

Nor to sit in our comfort zone if that means insufficient action.

We must find our own line, or own path, or our zone of progressive action that may or may not somewhat extend beyond whatever comfort zone we have.

We must build Character.

So to must we...

Manage Expectations

If we strengthen the dreams with small steps, the comfort zone expands.

Goals or Dreams not based on sufficient positive expectation (which comes from actual experience), may mean that we are forcing our expectations to be too high.

For example, if you have a goal to make 15 new business contacts in a single day yet have never done such a thing before, then uncertainty and apprehension can exist.

As such, that may not be an appropriate exectation.

For apprehension can lead to inaction.

And then nothing gets done.

Like a yo-yo, up and down, up and down, never in balance, never in a groove, never in 'the zone' or the flow of consistent progress.

Hence Character and Expectations go hand-in-hand to create success.

Breaking the aspiration down into steps will serve you better by building up genuine confidence through actual experience.

Maybe the first target is to mingle with people that may be suitable for exchanging contact information in whatever way is relevant. Maybe the second target will be to make one new contact.

By small steps does momentum build.

And momentum builds joy whilst naturally expanding the comfort zone.

Your Reason Why

The final suggestion for right now is to develop the meaning and significance behind the intended actions.

I wrote about that here:

With regards to over-excitement about expectations not based on sufficient experience, we must create a reason why we do something that is WITHIN the current believability factor.

For example: If you have the dream of becoming a Helicopter Pilot, the creative manifestation process requires that you go and experience things related to being a helicopter pilot, such as visiting a Helicopter flight school.

Yet, on setting that step as an intention, it is no longer a goal based on the mighty expectation of becoming a Helicopter pilot. It now exists in its own right as being an enjoyable experience related to something that you like the idea of.

This 'next step' that is believable and readily achievable is the experience to get excited about.

Thus we enter a flow of current real-life experiences which are themselves exciting and momentum then builds towards our dreams in a healthy, realistic and definite way.

This needs further expansion and I will do that in another post.

Steps

  • Develop your understanding of Character as per the definition given above.

  • Clarify and stay mindful of the expectations you are holding and make decisions to balance them appropriately.

  • Expand on your 'reasons why' as per the Training Balance Scale from Your Wish Is Your Command.

  • If you've not listened to the audio program Your Wish Is Your Command multiple times along with completing the new Guidebook, I urge you to do so carefully, slowly, and diligently.

For I believe the secrets of manifestation will come to roll in ecstacy at your feet.
